A musical gathering, not a fixed performance format
An Irish traditional music session is a gathering in which musicians play primarily for their own enjoyment. Sessions differ: some welcome visiting players, some are learning sessions, and others are effectively closed or performance-led. Listen and ask before joining.
Good session practice
- Listen for the local repertoire, tempo and structure.
- Join tunes you know securely rather than playing across the set.
- Keep accompaniment and percussion proportionate to the melody.
- Leave space for songs, airs, stories and conversation.
- If unsure whether a session is open, ask a musician or organiser.
