First, identify the kind of session
Sessions range from open gatherings to closed or performance-led groups. Slow sessions explicitly support learners. Do not assume every gathering is open: listen and ask.
Before joining
- Recognise the tune and be able to play it from memory.
- Match the group’s tempo and volume.
- Enter at a clear phrase boundary.
- If you lose the tune, stop and listen before re-entering.
Accompaniment and percussion
One sensitive accompanist may be enough. Listen for established rhythm and harmony, avoid competing chord systems, and keep the melodic line audible.
