Support is an active listening role
Irish traditional dance music is melody-led. Accompaniment practices have developed considerably, but good playing begins by protecting the tune’s rhythm, contour and space.
Session principles
- Listen through a full part before committing to a progression.
- Keep volume below the melody.
- Use fewer changes when the version is unfamiliar.
- Coordinate with other accompanists rather than layering conflicting patterns.
- Leave silence where it helps the music.
