Set up for a clear, relaxed sound

Use a comfortable strap height, keep both shoulders relaxed and fret immediately behind the fret rather than in the middle of the space. Hold the pick securely without locking the thumb or wrist.

Build alternate picking slowly

  1. Play open strings with an even down-up motion.
  2. Keep the pick movement small and listen for equal volume.
  3. Move between adjacent strings without increasing tension.
  4. Apply the same motion to one short jig or reel phrase.

Protect the rhythm

The tenor banjo is a melody instrument in Irish traditional music. Clear notes matter, but the phrase must still carry the pulse and lift of the tune. Practise with the Tune Room at a reduced speed, then increase the tempo only when the pick direction and rhythm remain settled.
