Begin with a secure melody
Ornaments differ across instruments, players and regional traditions. They work best when the basic phrase and pulse are already reliable.
A controlled experiment
- Choose one repeated or sustained note.
- Play the phrase plainly.
- Add one appropriate ornament.
- Record both versions.
- Keep it only if the phrase remains clear and rhythmic.
Avoid treating one recorded version as the only correct version. Compare several respected players and listen for function as well as surface detail.
