Map the form
Many dance tunes have two main parts, commonly described as A and B. Each part is repeated. Before playing, listen for where each part begins, ends and returns.
Work in musical phrases
- Loop one short phrase.
- Sing or lilt it accurately.
- Find it on the instrument.
- Repeat without the recording.
- Connect it to the phrase before it.
Do not postpone rhythm
Slow the music without flattening its pulse. Correct pitches learned with broken rhythm are difficult to repair.
